Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday following the team's 10-match winless start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous associations to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they begin the process of hiring a new head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a shock choice given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not need to provide any compensation.
